Mijas town hall has announced an investment of €483,685.40 to renovate and modernise beach equipment ahead of the upcoming bathing season. The initiative has been put out to public tender and was confirmed by the councillor for beaches, Daniel Gómez, as part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to improving coastal services.
Due to the scale and diversity of the equipment, the contract has been divided into several lots. Among the most significant additions are two five-metre-tall lifeguard stations, each equipped with a medical room, office space for lifeguards, a toilet and a watchtower. While the contractor will propose the façade design, final approval will rest with the town hall.
The project also includes the installation of six public toilet units, along with two additional modules adapted for people with ostomies, constructed from antibacterial medical-grade composite materials to ensure durability, hygiene and ease of maintenance.
Accessibility improvements form a key part of the investment, with 80 removable platforms designed for people with reduced mobility, all compliant with Andalusian accessibility regulations. Twenty of these platforms will feature the municipal coat of arms.
Further upgrades include the installation of 200 new litter bins for waste and recycling, 30 benches along Paseo de la Marina and the Senda Litoral, and six roll-up walkways designed to improve beach access and safety. The walkways will be modular, 1.8 metres wide and easily removable outside the bathing season.
Promoting active lifestyles is also a priority, with eight calisthenics training areas planned, each equipped with pull-up bars, freestyle bars and vertical poles.
“With this high-quality and varied equipment, we aim to optimise the condition of our beaches and improve services for users,” Gómez said. “Our beaches are our main calling card, and we work tirelessly to ensure they are maintained to the highest standards.”
